Obesity is defined as a condition that characterizes itself with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or higher. Obesity is considered to be a real existing epidemic in the United States, as it has been estimated that it affects 93.3 million American adults and approximately 13.7 American children. As for worldwide, there have been 650 million cases of obesity according to the latest statistics published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2016.

There is a variety of factors included in the development of obesity. The most common risk factors are:

  • A poor diet;
  • A sedentary lifestyle;
  • Sleep deprivation;
  • Older age;
  • Genetics;
  • Pregnancy, etc.

Certain health conditions, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), osteoarthritis, and hypothyroidism have been reported to cause obesity.
