Menopause

Menopause is the term that is being used to refer to the absence of menstrual periods for 12 months and longer. It is a naturally occurring time period in every woman’s life. Menopause usually occurs in women aged 40 or 50. It has been estimated that the average age for menopause in the United States is 51. It is also suggested that 1 in 100 women experience menopause before the age of 40. Menopause does not occur overnight, but rather over a longer time period is known as pre-menopause.

menopause

Menopause characterizes itself with a variety of physical and emotional symptoms as a result of the hormonal changes that occur during this time period. It is the decline in estrogen and progesterone levels that are causing these symptoms to occur. Among the most characteristic symptoms, there are:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats;
  • Mood swings;
  • Vaginal dryness;
  • Sleep issues;
  • Decline in libido;
  • Weight gain;
  • Anxiety;
  • Depression;
  • Urinary tract infections;
  • A decline in bone mass, etc.

Risk

Menopause increases the risk of osteoporosis since it has been estimated that menopausal women are exposed to the greatest risk of osteoporosis. Other potential complications include periodontal disease, vulvovaginal atrophy, a decline in metabolic rate, urinary incontinence, etc.

Women can ask for help to treat symptoms since they are known to interfere with the quality of life. Hormone replacement therapy can help reduce the present symptoms by providing the needed hormones. Taking supplements, exercising, eating healthy, and practicing relaxation techniques can also help relieve the symptoms efficiently.
