Hypercalcemia

Hypercalcemia is a condition that characterizes itself with a higher than normal concentration of calcium in the blood. Usually, the hypercalcemia causes more than 10.5 mg/dL of calcium to be present in the blood.

Mild hypercalcemia usually does not cause any symptoms. General symptoms include fatigue and headache, while the more specific ones include:

  • Excessive thirst;
  • Excessive urination;
  • Nausea and vomiting;
  • Abdominal pain;
  • Constipation;
  • Abnormal heart rhythms;
  • Muscle cramps;
  • Osteoporosis;
  • Bone pain;
  • Depression;
  • Memory loss;
  • Coma, etc.

Causes Of Hypercalcemia

The most common cause of hypercalcemia is overactive parathyroid glands. They stimulate the excess hormone that leads to more calcium being released from your bones, more calcium being absorbed, and less calcium to be excreted. Cancer, especially breast and lung cancer, is a common cause for hypercalcemia as well. It has been estimated that 10-20% of adult patients with cancer have been diagnosed with hypercalcemia as well. The use of certain medications and supplements can also lead to hypercalcemia.
